Le western est l'un des genres les plus anciens du cinéma, avec bon nombre des premières aventures sur grand écran racontant des histoires de vie mouvementée dans le vieil ouest. Le premier film occidental jamais produit n'a pas été réalisé dans le Far West lui-même, mais dans la campagne anglaise. Ce court métrage de 1899, "Kidnapping by Indians", ne durait qu'une minute (et rempli de stéréotypes sur les Amérindiens, qui avaient été véhiculés à travers des histoires rapportées au Royaume-Uni par des travailleurs du coton).
